A warm-season grass that creeps into fescue, bluegrass, and ryegrass lawns and is tough to get rid of.

What it looks like

Grows low and dense, spreading by runners that creep along the ground and root as they go. It stands out from cool-season turf because of its finer texture and faster, spreading growth habit.

Often mistaken for: Crabgrass or other creeping grassy weeds

When it shows up in the Triangle

Most active and noticeable during the warmer months when it's actively growing and spreading.

Where you’ll see it

Shows up in home lawns of tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and perennial ryegrass.

What you can do

  • Keep your cool-season lawn mowed at the right height and thick to crowd it out
  • Hand-pull or dig out small patches as soon as you spot them
  • Avoid overwatering or over-fertilizing, which can favor bermudagrass spread
  • Edge along beds and walkways where it tends to creep in from
