What it looks like

Gray-green leaves and stems covered in fine hair, giving it a fuzzy look. It creeps along the ground and roots wherever the stems touch soil. It's often confused with common chickweed, which is smoother and a lighter green with just a single hairy line on the stem.

Often mistaken for: Common chickweed

When it shows up in the Triangle

Shows up from fall through spring in the Triangle, around the same time as common chickweed.

Where you’ll see it

Found in home lawns, especially thin, shady, or overly wet areas.

What you can do

  • Cut back on watering—soggy soil invites this weed in
  • Prune trees or thin plantings to let more light reach the lawn
  • Thicken up turf with regular mowing, fertilizing, and overseeding thin spots
  • Hand-pull small patches before they spread and root further
